Ganagapur from Kalaburagi: a visitor’s guide to the Dattatreya temple

By YatryOne team ·

Sri Kshetra Ganagapur, in Afzalpur taluk of Kalaburagi district, is one of the most important places of Dattatreya worship in India. Devotees come from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and many of them start from Kalaburagi, which is about an hour away by road.

Why people go

The temple is linked to Sri Narasimha Saraswati, honoured as an incarnation of Dattatreya, who lived at Ganagapur. Devotees worship the Nirguna Paduka (the sacred footprints) at the main shrine, known as the Nirguna Math.

Close to the town is the Sangam, where the Bhima and Amarja rivers meet. Many visitors bathe at the Sangam and at the Ashta Theertha, the eight sacred bathing places around the town, before the darshan.

When to go

  • Datta Jayanti, in the month of Margashira (usually December), is the biggest festival. The town is very crowded: book your car a day or two ahead and leave early.
  • Thursdays and full-moon days are busier than other days.
  • October to February is the most comfortable season. Summer afternoons are hot on the ghats.

How to plan the trip

  1. Leave Kalaburagi early, around 6 am, to reach before the crowds.
  2. Visit the Sangam first if you want to bathe, then the main temple.
  3. Keep time for the Sangameshwar and Kalleshwar temples if you are not in a hurry.
  4. Most visitors are back in Kalaburagi by afternoon.

One way or round trip?

Ganagapur is close, so a one-way car is charged for a minimum distance. If you are coming back the same day, book a round trip: the driver waits for you while you bathe and take darshan, and you do not have to look for a car back. The fare covers the whole day, including the driver’s allowance.

Travelling with family or elders? An SUV gives seven seats and more room for bags and offerings.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly and carry a change of clothes if you plan to bathe.
  • Leave footwear in the car or at the stands near the temple.
  • Keep some cash: small shops and offerings near the temple often do not take UPI.
